My Heart Beats

by Alex Monday

My Heart Beats

but time moves

My heart beats

the clock ticks

things change forever

and forever stay the same

My heart, it beats

and beats

Its beats change

but forever stay the same

because it beats in my

rhythm of love of you

And it's a tune that's

forever different and

forever the same

It's a tune that's always growing old

and becoming new

It was always here

but not everything that's here

is always known.

Alexander Monday wrote this poem to Dawn Bratton after getting out of the ICU at age 36 for heart failure and learning that he has cardiomyopathy (an enlarged heart). He has since stabilized and is doing well, though on lifelong medication.
